Anti-war artwork

Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” review                      Evaggelos Tagias,Γ3’

I look at the painting. I can’t say it’s visually appealing but I don’t think that the target of the painter, Picasso, was to make it look beautiful. No, he wanted to send a message and let everyone know about the unspeakable events that took place in the city of Guernica. And I think he did an excellent job. Picasso depicted the brutality and misery of war perfectly with a mother holding her dead child, animals and people running and screaming, a dead soldier on the ground and a woman trapped in a flaming building. All these, along with the absence of any color other than black, white and grey create unpleasant feelings, that’s why many people criticize it negatively. But Picasso also added tiny details that give us hope like the flower growing out of the broken sword of the dead soldier, to remind us that after darkness always comes the light.
