Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen

Baz Luhrmann: Everybody's Free (to Wear Sunscreen) Lyrics

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99
If I could offer you only one tip for the future,
 sunscreen would be it.
The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience…

I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth;
oh nevermind; you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked….
You’re not as fat as you imagine.

Don’t worry about the future;
or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind;
the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you
Sing

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts,
don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss

Don’t waste your time on jealousy;
sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind…
the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this,
tell me how.
Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life…
the most interesting people I know
didn’t know at 22 what they  wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.
Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children,maybe you won’t,
maybe you’ll divorce at 40,
maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…
whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either
– your choices are half chance,
so are everybody else’s.
Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…
don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it,
it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own..

Dance…
even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.
Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go,
but for the precious few you should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard;
live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander,
you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it.
Advice is a form of nostalgia,
dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen…

Just a tiny bit of POETRY

When You Are Old by William Butler Yeats : The Poetry Foundation

When You Are Old

BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars?

Maya Angelou

Inspired by Electra and Marianna's project on Maya Angelou, a poem and a video...

Still I Rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Celebrities and Social Media

Talking and reading about celebrities, led us to the short film below which shows how social media have completely distorted real life relationships. The girls in the film take their selfies with the actress without even asking her permission, without any interest in her as a personality or an artist...

We then took things a bit further and considered social media as a means of communication and how our self-image  is so important on facebook and other media. The short film below portrays the effects social media has on people's life excellently.

Mock Elections

Well, on Friday 10th October both ΓΑΓΚ2 and ΓΑΓΚ3 delivered their pre-electoral speeches and we had our mock-elections. The former actually voted for the best pre-electoral speech and the results satisfied all - I hope - which was actually the point of the whole exercise (learning to appreciate quality). Unfortunately the same is not true for the latter. In fact, ΓΑΓΚ3 not only did not vote for a well-structured and excellently-delivered speech, but for a 30 second improvisation!!! Fair enough, improvising can be difficult but that was not the point. I guess such exercises can't always be successful. Congratulations to all those who wrote and delivered their speeches. You can read some of the best on the page "Speeches 2014"

I Am! by John Clare : The Poetry Foundation

I Am! by John Clare : The Poetry Foundation

All things can change!

In this short, autobiographical film, Malcom Barton Jr. shows how young people - especially adolescents - are prone to self-destructive decisions. He narrates his personal story and proves that all things can change!

Happy New year!!! Let's all get ready for a unique 2014!
So guys, what's in store for you for the next couple of weeks? Well, to begin with, we'll be exploring self-identity and writing poetry in the process(?) Yes, poetry - wipe that look off your faces!
First things first...look at yourselves carefully in the "mirror" and write down what you think makes you unique - interests, friendships, social connections, school etc. Also try to write down how you think others see you. Have fun, be honest and share your thoughts with the rest of the class.
